Packing a
banana or an
apple for a healthy snack during your busy work or school day may only lead to bruised
and damaged fruit.
When I'm flying with my kid I usually
pack: a baggy of Canaan's current favorite cereal (either Rice Chex or now it's pumpkin Joe's O's), LaraBars, Rx Bars, or Perfect Bars, dried coconut strips,
apple slices, celery or carrots, homemade Easy Protein Energy Bites, a
banana and Justin's vanilla almond butter packets
and sometimes a small container of rinsed chickpeas.

A few months ago, the blogosphere was in a tizzy over an episode in which a North Carolina «government inspector» allegedly forced a child to trade in her home -
packed lunch of a turkey
and cheese sandwich,
banana, potato chips,
and apple juice because the meal did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines; instead the child was forced to take the school meal of chicken nuggets.
These two incidents were reminiscent of other, similar stories I've reported on in the past: in 2011, a Chicago school principal at the Little Village Academy placed an outright ban on home -
packed lunches, setting off a barrage of criticism,

Pack finger foods like

and pears (but keep in mind that on some international flights nonpackaged fruit is banned), cereal («o» cereals are a favorite),
and miniature rice cakes.
