Christians renamed
pagan holidays and still celebrate them.
The Evolution of Christmas This site explains the links between Christmas and early
pagan holidays, such as the Winter Solstice.
When it gets into the meat of the holiday, however, via a gaggle of historians telling how Christianity ground up all sorts of
Pagan holidays into its easily - masticated, mealy host — well, then it's interesting.
What might have eventually passed into oblivion (as all other ancient
pagan holidays), is now a recurring celebration of eroticism, pre-marital sex, and fertility — all in the name of «Saint Valentine.»
Through redemption, Jesus not only transforms and rescues you and I, but also
pagan holidays, wicked places, torn nations, and corrupt governments.
DO NOT FOLLOW
THE PAGAN HOLIDAYS (CHRISTMAS, AND EASTER) or any of the others
They were just co-opted from
pagan holidays and do not require worship in magic man in the sky to have fun on those days.
Actually, Christianity is based on Pagan stories and celebrates
Pagan holidays.
The physical practices and times of year may have parallels with
pagan holidays, but if used to celebrate Christianity, then they sort of become Christian practice.
At this time in history, the churches were receiving pagans into the church ranks,
the pagan holidays were incorporated with the church so that no one was offended and to keep the pagans comfortable while learning our Savior, Jesus Christ's message of truth.
Many hypocrites do
these pagan holidays with glee, and cheer, while ignoring those who can't even afford to do them, or have pains, deprivations, lost, and suffering, such selfish folly.
If origins did matter, then christians would not celebrate Christmas or Easter because both are based on
pagan holidays.
From the vestments (which are really nothing more than the Fourth Century CE court clothing of the Eastern Roman Empire), the canonized saints (which are essentially «Christian» demigods that replaced the pagan pantheon), the numerous feast days and holy days (which replaced
pagan holidays), the statues and painted icons (which replaced pagan idols), and the episcopal structure (in which «third sons» of landed aristocrats who had no hope of inheriting their fathers» titles and lands could become «princes of the church» with as much worldly comfort as the «first sons» and almost as much wealth and power), the Anglican Church was practically indistinguishable from the Roman Church except that they used English in the Mass instead of Latin.
Most Christian holidays began as
pagan holidays.
But if you do, then there is a lot to be learned from
pagan holidays, and a lot of joy and festivity to be celebrated.
It does not promote the political arena, nor the churches
pagan holidays, not the «world's» divisiveness.
The physical practices and times of year do have parallels with
pagan holidays.
Yeah while were at it lets add Jewish holidays, and
pagan holidays as well.
Instead we celebrate
pagan holidays like Christmas and Easter.
Theres more to
the pagan holidays than what you mentioned.
So today we have Easter, Christmas, Valantines Day, Ground Hogs day, all previous
Pagan Holidays converted and Christianized not to mention packaged and merchandized We also celebrate Halloween which is the Death of the Sun god in Pagan belief.
I believe that
Pagan holidays and pagan rituals and pagan beliefs, and all the old stories and tales and myths from pagan religions are actually the cry of the divine image of God in man to return to what was lost.
Pagan holidays continued to be practiced and observed, but they were adopted and adapted by Christianity, and given new meaning and interpretations that fit better with Christian theology and ideas.
Most Christians want to stay as far away from
Pagan holidays as they can, thinking that participating in
pagan holidays is participation with the world.
Pagan holidays reveal a longing for what was lost.
No it's not your Christ wasn't even born in December it was stolen from other
pagan holidays, especially the winter Solstice.
In fact, I wrote a whole book proving that Jesus was not born in December, and that most of our Christmas traditions are
Pagan holidays....
Pagan holidays are among those things Jesus redeems.
However, please know that there are some Christians who do not follow pagan traditions or observe
pagan holidays.
Given the things that I've said about pagan elements in the Christian church, this might surprise you, but the old
pagan holidays are actually good occasions to contrast the message of Yehoshua with the old pagan beliefs.
But more than that, and here is the best part, and also the part that explains why I revel in
pagan holidays, through the grace of Jesus, if He can redeem me from my slavery to sin, why can not He also redeem stories?
Jesus is in the business of redemption, and just as Jesus has redeemed you and I, He redeems the cultural elements and traditions that surround us, including
pagan holidays.
The Catholic church set the birth of Jesus to be at the same time of
the pagan holidays of the Winter Solstice, which the Romans called Saturnalia.
(And please don't come back with how the observed date of X-Mas was chose based on pre-existing
Pagan holidays - I'm obviously ahead of you there.)
(3) Yes, the date was moved from the traditional date (March) to the new tradional date (December) to overlap
some pagan holidays — again, to help convert the pagans who were more likely to convert when they didn't have to give up their feasting, singing, and gift giving with conversion.
Pagan holidays aren't birthdays or death - days.
Are you saying that we shouldn't celebrate Christmas and Easter because they used to be
pagan holidays and sometimes are still celebrated that way today?
Of course, one of the things he struggled with was what to do with all of
these pagan holidays.
(See posts about Hanukkah,
Pagan Holidays, Easter, Mithras)
THE BIBLE DOES NT TEACH THE OBSERVANCE OF
THOSE PAGAN HOLIDAYS PERIOD!
It was chosen because the King wanted to celebrate Christ and it coincided with
the pagan holidays, therefore allowing the pagans their parties without causing them to riot — look into Saturnalia if you don't believe me
It was a very common tactic for christians to «repurpose»
pagan holidays and rituals to meet christian needs.
(Christmas, Easter — great observances, but the celebration dates coincide with
pagan holidays.
A decade ago, the «war on Christmas», I'd have to educate many people that X-mas was a CHRISTIAN abbreviation for Christmas, based on Christ's true name, not a secular insult, the fact that it was based on many
pagan holidays.
I don't see them upset at
pagan holidays.
Looking ahead: Very few people probably know that Easter began as
a pagan holiday.
Hey history student drop outs, the season is and always was
a pagan holiday until your most holy and devout Constantine tried to unify his empire by fusing Christ to
a pagan holiday.
Easter may have its origins as
a pagan holiday... but Catholics... which are a branch of Christianity, view Easter as the holiest of days... starting on Good Friday when Jesus was executed to his rebirth on Sunday.
Bring it back to being
the pagan holiday it once was and quit trying to revise history.
It's
a Pagan holiday celebrating the Spring equinox and a fertility festival (the rabbit and egg being leftover symbols that exist today).
