Since, after all, the publisher treated the writer as nothing more than
a paid fanfic writer in the first place.

I typically am not one of those who enjoy the idea of people getting
paid to write
fanfic, but in this case it actually made sense.
But Gutenberg and
fanfic have been around for a long time and new books have still been traditionally published (and I still
pay for print editions of public domain works).
I mean, they aren't
fanfic in that the writers were
paid and sometimes even commissioned, but they are
fanfic in that the writers are clearly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the show and the characters.

I'd be willing to
pay for good
fanfic — isn't that essentially what the Star Trek novels are?
That said, I'd be a lot pickier about what
fanfic I would read if I was
paying for it and I'd be much less likely to take a chance on something I wasn't sure I'd like.
As a
fanfic reader, if there was something I wanted to read on Kindle Worlds, I'd happily
pay for it.

Since it is not an original book / story, which can be filmed only by Warner Bros, it means that one can make a deal to produce a movie based on
fanfic, and
pay, say, 80 % of revenue to the author, if author is agreed:)
