You will immediately start

paid books scale and most people see little difference between free and a dollar.

books and then lose all your effort when your
book goes on the
paid ranking scale.
By making your
book free for a short time at Amazon it works a similar way — you are aiming for more traffic, better

paid ranking scale immediately.
Another reason why I hate the free
book launch process is because Amazon has two different
ranking scales for free and
paid books.
Question for you... I've been looking into a few niches on Amazon and I've found some where the
books have a
ranking of say # 737,129
Paid in Kindle Store but are not
ranked in any individual categories.
The scammer dropped the price and used hundreds of fake accounts to download the free
book, which then drove it up the
rankings and into better visibility for
paying consumers when he put the price back up.
This will have the organic effect of bubbling you
book UP the FREE
book ranks, NOT the
paid book.
A couple years ago, when free downloads of
books counted toward the
paid ranking on Amazon when a title reverted to
paid, running a KDP Select free promotion for a handful of days was a useful way to gain visibility.
I used a
paid promotion to catapult the
ranking of my
book to # 1 in one of Amazon's genres.
Note that if you make the MatchBook price free, MatchBook sales won't affect your

book's previous
Paid rank will influence its new

Now, after an algorithm shift, those free downloads don't help your
paid ranking as much, so unless you hit the top of the free list with a massive number of downloads (probably at least 20,000), it won't place your
book very high on the
paid bestseller lists.
I noted during my close look at Amazon's
rankings some
books would jump to the top of the
pay for charts at Kindle, but were reissues or just a reprint lately in the news.
Although not selected by Scout, Nick of Time is her highest
ranked book so far, with thousands of page views on Kindle Unlimited (a subscription program that
pays the author based on how many pages are read).
I later learned that this is normal, and it takes a while for a
book to find it's feet when it returns to the
paid rankings, so don't panic if this happens to you too.

book ranked as # 5 in the Nook Store and # 30 on the Amazon Kindle
Paid List.
One way to move the needle quickly in terms of sales and
ranking is by using
paid promotion sites that have lists of avid readers who might be interested in your
book.
Each
book in the series, at the
ranks I mentioned, takes about 3 - 4 months to
pay off its own production costs.
