Unfortunately finding cheap trains in Europe seems mostly impossible, but if you take a trip to Morocco, you find first
class fares for less than you
pay for a sandwich in Europe and if you come to Turkey you can travel by train in the Balkans for

This is especially true if you'd be required to
pay high surcharges on a business
class fare.
The people really affected will be families traveling on vacation who will now find themselves having to
pay more if they want to take their suitcases with them (either in extra bag fees or by
paying for regular Economy
Class fares which will now cost more).
Europeans frequently have access to transatlantic Business
Class sales where the
fares are well under $ 2,000 roundtrip (like here and here), so why would anybody
pay over $ 3,400 for 115,000 miles in a sale like this one to buy a Business
Class award ticket?
That's a pretty good price to
pay for a Business
Class fare between Europe and Asia and what made it better for me was that it was for travel on Qatar's A330 and A380 aircraft — I hadn't had a chance to review the Business
Class cabin on either of those aircraft up until this trip (I reviewed the A380 First
Class product last year).
Premium cabin travel doesn't have to be horrifically expensive nor does it have to be purchased with a loyalty currency (Avios) if you're to get a good deal — you can easily
pay more for Economy
Class fares to some of these cities so these Business
Class fares really are very good indeed — especially the
fare to Los Angeles.
If Alitalia only drops out of existence shortly before my trip the cost of a replacement
fare will be extortionate — insurance will
pay for any loss but I don't think it will
pay for me to fly on a $ 3,500 — $ 4,000 Business
Class fare just because I still want to go to LA.

That round trip Business
Class fare cost me around $ 1,100 (which converted to $ 1,284.83 when I

paying for first
class isn't an option — the companion
fare wouldn't apply.)
You're also
paying much less than if a companion
fare were still valid for first
class under the old rules.
I've been on the look out for good
fares since the beginning of August and, while American did post a somewhat tempting Economy
Class fare from London back in September, the Business
Class fares out of Europe have come nowhere near what I'm prepared to
pay....
If American's SWUs only allow upgrades from Economy to Premium Economy it could be a lot cheaper to
pay for a more expensive economy
fare on United and upgrade from there into Business
Class than to
pay for Premium Economy on American and upgrade to Business from there.
The proposed new system would work by basing the number of miles earned on the price of the
fare paid leaving a lost all economy
class flyers a lot worse off.
Benefits of this status include complimentary upgrades to first
class, when available, from most
fares including award tickets but excluding ultra discounted E
fares and
Pay With Miles tickets.
That's for two reasons: it can only be redeemed for tickets in Lufthansa's most expensive economy
fare classes (H, M, Y, and B), and it requires you to
pay all the taxes and fees associated with a
paid ticket.
An even more lucrative offer is to
pay for a full
fare business
class flight and get a complimentary partner ticket (or use the upgrade option).
So, if we purchased the Economy
Class fares using cash, we'd
pay out $ 2,150 for both of us (2 x $ 1,075) and then get an effective rebate of $ 607 (in the form of miles).

There may also be additional taxes and fees to
pay (on top of those that are already included in your original
fare) if you're moving up from Economy
Class to a premium cabin — flights out of the UK are a very good example of this.
Most people reading this blog aren't going to be booking the more expensive Business
Class fares where the amount of money
paid means that mileage earning won't be too bad — most of us are buying Business
Class tickets where the
fare is $ 2,000 or less.
One scenario I see where buying miles might make sense is if you frequently
pay for business
class fares.
Level will offer 6
fare classes: Basic Economy offers a flight from A to B with 1 piece of handluggage and you'll
pay extra for seat assignment, food and checked luggage, but do earn (some) Avios award miles.
Anytime you see a high promotional rate, you should always consider this route because it's not uncommon to be able to
pay an economy rate for a business
class fare by purchasing miles during a promotion (especially if you can stack promotions).
