Based on my reading with Amazon, the KDP promotions have no direct impact on
your paid sales rank.
Amazon displays a separate sales ranking for books that are free compared to
their paid sales rank categories (price of at least $ 0.01).
Equivalent sales don't count toward the Amazon

If you drill down on Amazon's Kindle best seller lists, the free and
paid sales ranks are separated.
(Or your book could toggle back and forth between the free and
paid sales ranks with every free or paid purchase.)

rankings.
SmartAsset calculated the amount of money a specific person would

sales ranking in the
Paid Kindle Store OR the Free in Kindle Store if a single giveaway is not claimed.
Because of the
sales rank help it turns out that August may be my highest
paying month yet.
I've seen some evidence of my own books being positively impacted, but didn't
pay attention to
sales ranking before KU.

The green line shows how
paid Kindle
sales are now well above paper
sales, the crossover point doesn't come until around the
rank of 20,000, at which point paper and Kindle titles are selling about the same.
Since the 3 day promotion ended, it has remained in top
rankings in its category in
paid sales and the overall Kindle
ranking is much higher than it was before the promotion.
But at the end of the day you can not
pay the rent with a review no matter how good it is or a
sales rank even if it technically puts you into a top 100 listing.
Better
rankings (so you appear on more «you might also like» «customers also bought» lists), better visibility (often the free downloads will help
sales of other books as well as get you reviews) and higher
sales (the majority of people do see a huge jump in
sales once the book goes back to
paid).
By making your book free for a short time at Amazon it works a similar way — you are aiming for more traffic, better
rankings and, later down the track once it goes
paid again: higher
sales.

I have yet to see what I will be
paid for these (it comes from a designated monthly pool of money, and it's a trust issue for all of us KDP Select authors with Amazon), but they counted toward my
paid downloads /
sales and helped me stay high in the
rankings.
Most notably, Amazon no longer calculates
paid rankings with as much favor to free downloads, so the post free promo -
sales bump is less dramatic.

This also means that if your book has a price one day, and then switches to free pricing for even just 1 day, it will no longer offer a
sales rank that can be tracked until it becomes a
paid title again.
As every one is by now aware, if you
rank fairly high on your free days, you see a bump in
sales for four or so days after, due to the Amazon algorithms treating free downloads the same as
paid downloads for the purposes of things like the Movers and Shakers list, as well as «also bought» recommendations.
Amazon
pays attention to these as much as they do
sales on launch day and beyond, and if you get enough of them flowing you can watch the
sales rank of your book climb.
That «80 % +» holds whether one measures by titles released, by face value, by copies sold, by compensation
paid to authors, by shelf - inches devoted in general bookstores, by
sales rankings at Amazon... indeed, by any numeric measure of which I am aware, and my «day job» involves being directly and immediately aware of what's going on in publishing.
In addition, The Roswell Conspiracy's
paid ranking in the store will drop during the three days it's not on
sale.
It was like the needle was frozen at # 29,738 in the
Paid Kindle Store (sold 3 more copies, KDP shows me the
sales, but the page
rank doesn't flicker!)

Sales Rank in the

We started with the price of $ 0.99 so that we could continue with a high volume of
sales and establish our spot on top of the
paid rankings.
Authors should
pay attention to the
sales rank of various titles in their niche to understand their competition, and find opportunities for potential titles to write about in the future based on
sales rank statistics.
It's currently
ranked 8th in
sales among all
paid Kindle books....
I am currently only published on Amazon so even though my
sales rank has been in the Top 100
Paid for weeks, I won't be adding «New York Times Bestseller» to my covers anytime soon.
That translates into more readers and higher
ranking, but will not show up as
sales or money until the end of the
pay period.
Based on
sales in February, Amazon Publishing now
ranks as the 5th largest publisher on the US Kindle platform (excluding free downloads but including KOLL loans, for which we
pay authors).
One way to move the needle quickly in terms of
sales and
ranking is by using
paid promotion sites that have lists of avid readers who might be interested in your book.
I started the pen name books there, to take advantage of the
sales ranking / visibility boost from Kindle Unlimited, and I returned them to KDP Select this August, after not gaining much headway in the other stores and after Amazon switched to Kindle Unlimited 2.0, a system that rewards novelists by
paying based on total pages read.
The promotional perks (Countdown Deals and Free Promotions) aren't without value, but KU earnings and the
ranking boosts you currently get from those borrows are the reasons I'm there with the pen name (note: a borrow is always going to be easier to get than a
sale, because it's absolutely free to someone who's
paid their monthly subscription fee).
Sending traffic to your Amazon page with
paid ads can actually hurt your
sales rank if that traffic isn't buying the book.
But «
sales per
ranking» is not something you can use to
pay your landlord.
Plus those projects
pay for my editors and cover design) rather than increasing
sales and
ranking.
To get
paid for borrows, a reader must get to the 10 % point in the book, but right now, every single borrow that is made gives a boost to your
sales ranking, regardless of whether the person reads any of it.
The other critical component of the KDP Select program that often goes unmentioned is that we are
paid on borrows (not a component of
rankings though), usually more per book than my normal 70 % profit on each
sale.
