One could go on to discuss the committed and rather spectacular performance that Miles Teller gives in the role Pazienza, or the cool aesthetic that matches the
time period in small, effective ways, but despite the casts best efforts and writer / director Ben Younger's endeavor to
paint more a portrait of a man determined to overcome the odds rather than going through the motions of another redemptive sports tale,
Bleed for This unfortunately ends up reducing itself to just that.
Working in perfect concert with the words are Ford's full -
bleed, soulful oil
paintings, which lovingly capture emotion — serenity in Cash's beatific face when he sings along with the radio; rapture when he hears June Carter sing for the first
time.
I allow the
paint to
bleed, smudge, peel back at
times, which disrupts the illusory or pictorial space, emphasizing the materials and surface instead... the way in which I construct illusions of depth and space, where certain patterns seem to float in front of others, screens of lines that you are looking through, into another internal space.
The exhibition not only shows Saint Phalle's numerous shooting
paintings — considered scandalous at the
time — but also footage of her in action, standing before her canvases where she would plaster on small pots and bags of
paint and then shoot at them mercilessly with a shotgun till they
bled paint.
Depending on the temperature, humidity, viscosity of the fluid and the pressure,
paint will react with the material differently each
time, where the
bleeding fragments of runny color, around and in between the lettering, remind of the Pollock's dripping, while the thick layers of
paint give out a bas - relief impression.
There was only one coat of
paint on at the
time and if you look closely you can kind of see the
bleed through that I was talking about.
