Josiah McElheny's A Painter's Life letterpress prints, along with his Imaginary
Paintings (colored
glass sheets in antique
frames) provided the capstone to a remarkable year of exhibitions at the Donald Young Gallery.
In 1974, after six months of meditating on a topic, the German artist Peter Dreher began
painting a single drinking
glass on a tabletop in his Wittnam studio each day, keeping the window
framed in the lower left of the
glass and maintaining the same muted palette of whites and greys.
That terrain lies equidistantly between
painting and sculpture, trading in
frames and thresholds, extending out in to space with media as various as
paint on canvas, on metal, copper wire, mirror and
glass.

Although Bell had early success with Abstract Expressionist
painting, a side job at a
frame shop led him to experiment with excess scraps of
glass, thus beginning his fascination with the material's interaction with light.
The 12 works on exhibit, created between 2003 and 2015, all adopt the same format: large, shallow, steel -
framed glass boxes holding different arrangements of found objects and two - dimensional works — mostly lithographs but also
paint on paper and pochoir on sandpaper.

Palmsonntag (Palm Sunday) is a monumental installation consisting of a 30 - foot - long palm tree cast in fiberglass and resin, its roots clotted with mud, surrounded by a cycle of 44 large

The absence of a human figure tasks the objects in the
