paintings from the late 1950s and early 1960s were often textured with sand, hessian, metal and

White's
paintings begin as photographs taken of his immediate environs — his house, studio or hotel rooms — which he then
paints on either
wood or aluminum panels and encases in Plexiglas
boxes.
In this assemblage of forms, Sara Barker combines numerous unexpected textures including a hand -
painted landscape on steel, honeycombed resin, brass,
wood and the lacquer finish used on traditional Japanese
boxes.

I have watched many a
box of finishes for an entire brand new house; tile, granite,
wood flooring, and fabrics, schlepped into a Benjamin Moore
paint store in the hopes of getting «a free colour consultation».
I just ran the scraper up and down the edges of the
box, and the chalk
paint chipped right off, exposing the dark
wood underneath.
Balsa
wood was purchased from a craft store,
paints were mixed, drinking straws and cardboard
boxes were pressed into service as roofing materials.
The yellow storage cubes originally were unfinished
wood boxes that I
painted yellow and stenciled with robots in blue.
