Which teachers there had most
effect on your
painting?
The
paintings both recall and reject the former realism of the banana plants series,
which, from the start, contained quite abstract
effects.
Bee enjoys the way the soft outer edges of the
paintings feel optically;
which enhances the mysterious
effect produced by her oil
paintings.
In her recent show with the Beijing satellite gallery of New York's Chambers Fine Art, she has concentrated on what she calls landscape
paintings,
which don't present landscapes so much as a kind of floating abstract world reminiscent of the work of the Chilean modernist, Roberto Matta, in their atmospheric

He employs a rich array of singular hues in his

effect of the soft, malleable qualities of the lead that became visible through the thin layers of
paint which he applied to the surface.
In addition this room also houses Jones's experimental works merging
painting and sculpture to great
effect in Stand In (1991/2) and Barely There (1967) in
which tiled steps lead up and into the canvas.
The catalogue chronicles Grotjahn's series of Butterfly
paintings and drawings, in
which he combines varying schemes of one - point perspective and a systematic investigation of color to mesmerizing
effect; his penetrating flower and face
paintings; and a recent series of «mask» sculptures that extend Grotjahn's idiosyncratic investment in process and ritual in
painting into three dimensions.
SL Such as the wind, for example, an elemental force

paintings?
A second grouping of
paintings highlights other recent work,
which incorporates Faust's signature shadows and illusionary
effects.
Alfred Frankenstein, writing for the San Francisco Chronicle, wrote of McChesney's first exhibition of the Arena series, «The sense of process,
which plays so significant a role in all modern
painting, is strong here, but McChesney does not let it run away with him; the process is superbly controlled, the craftsmanship is high, the total
effect is mature and considered.
