The show presented a new body of work — formal
studies of the female
form, including large, expressive line
paintings of the body rendered in blue
paint on raw canvas — that marked a radical departure from Emin's vernacular up until that moment.
In 1983 for the first time in fifteen years, Riley returned to Venice to once again
study the
paintings that
form the basis of European colorism.
For example, included are the exhibition are two preparatory drawings and their related
painting, Blue, Black and Grey of 1960, which reveal her sensitivity to abstract

I've come through as a filmmaker, having convinced myself that my sort of movie is a
form of
painting, that it would not have happened without looking at
paintings as a young visitor to MoMA, or then
studying with Hans Hofmann and my admiration for the Abstract Expressionists.
The exhibition is
formed from a selection of over 30
paintings and
studies from throughout Riley's career, illustrating the artist's close dedication to the interaction of
