Meticulous auscultation will allow detection of cardiac disease signs such as a murmur, arrhythmia, pulse deficit or signs of reduced cardiac output such
as pale mucous membranes.
Any patient that is in shock (signs of shock can include weakness,
pale mucous membranes in their mouth, cold extremities, and an abnormal heart rate)
The clinical signs of flea anemia
include pale mucous membranes (gums and sclera of the eyes), weakness, loss of appetite, and rapid shallow respiration.
These conditions can cause signs such
as pale mucous membranes, weak pulses, dehydration, and anemia (low number of red blood cells).
A physical exam may reveal small or irregular kidneys, weight loss and loss of muscle tone,
pale mucous membranes, oral ulcers and uremic breath.
The typical signs of shock are increased heart rate (over 200 beats per minute), rapid shallow breathing, cold extremities, and
pale mucous membranes (rather than pink membranes).
Dogs, especially small dogs (< 10 kg), with high microfilarial counts (> 40,000 / µL) may develop tachycardia, tachypnea,
pale mucous membranes, lethargy, retching, diarrhea, and even shock.
Clinical signs are generally secondary to the anemia, with resultant weakness, lethargy and
pale mucous membranes.
Anemic pets have
pale mucous membranes and a rapid heart beat.
Symptoms and signs other than dermatological were as follow: anorexia (n = 7; 36.8 %),
pale mucous membranes (n = 6; 31.6 %), lethargy (n = 4; 21 %), lymph - adenomegaly (n = 4; 21 %), hyperestesia (n = 4; 21 %), fever (n = 3; 15.8 %) and conjunctivitis (n = 2; 10.5 %).
Hemolytic anemia may have additional signs such as port wine urine color, sometimes icterus or yellow color to the skin, sclera and mucous membranes,
pale mucous membranes and even collapsing episodes.
Vets will advise owners of cats known to have ingested food with allium content to ensure adequate hydration, to provide a high protein diet and to return if there is any sign of anaemia (
pale mucous membranes, lethargy, weakness, dark urine) over the next few days.

Dogs with any type of polycythemia can have behavioral changes, difficulty walking, nose bleeds, red or
pale mucous membranes, breathing problems and impaired vision.
