Matthias Diemer, the Co-chair of the
Palm Oil Innovation Group
issued the following statement during the annual European meeting of the Roundtable on Sustainable
Palm Oil (RSPO):
If accepted to POIG, Sime Darby will be the first Malaysian
palm oil giant to commit to the POIG Charter, including its innovations on tackling pressing labour
issues that have led to growing concerns amongst consumers of
palm oil.
POIG is growing both membership and its capacity to address key
issues in the
palm oil sector.
While many users of
palm oil in the consuming countries are committed to CSPO, its greater growth especially SG grades has been somewhat held back due to the premium; an
issue further confounded by CSPO supply chain challenges.
The RSPO is the first and only industry wide certification standard for the
palm oil industry, at its heart are eight principles and criteria covering social and environmental
issues.
To ensure our purchases do not contribute to deforestation, loss of biodiversity or social
issues such as forced and child labor and human trafficking, Kraft Heinz seeks to procure
palm oil products in an ethical, transparent, responsible and sustainable manner.

The
palm oil industry in SE Asia is linked to major
issues such as deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the SE Asia, as the land and forests must be cleared for the development of the
