Last week, Indonesia's chief natural resources minister, Rizal Ramli, told Parliament that Indonesia together with Malaysia is backing a new
palm oil producing group.
However, rain forests and peat lands in
palm oil producing countries are under pressure — particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia — and in response, many of the world's largest retailers and food companies have pledged to convert entirely to sustainable palm oil by 2015.
When companies join the RSPO, they commit to grow and use
palm oil produced in a way that is fair to people, ecosystems and to wildlife.
Palm oil produced in compliance to stringent criteria and standard set by RSPO can then be offered as certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO).
«Our findings show that products bearing the RSPO label are less likely to contain
palm oil produced on recently deforested lands, so by purchasing certified palm oil, you are supporting a reduction in deforestation, as well as increased transparency in the oil palm industry,» explained co-author David Burns of the National Wildlife Federation.
A 2007 study by Susan Page of the University of Leicester found that one ton of
