I don't eat traditional
sugar but I used coconut
palm sugar instead and it
worked out well.
I'm not sure what your specific dietary needs are, but I have grown quite a fondness for stevia, coconut
palm sugar, and maple syrup and think they would
work rather well here — either in combo or singularly.
Rolling the balls was very sticky, so I put powdered
sugar on a paper plate and dipped both
palms in after rolling each ball and it
worked wonders; balls came out smooth.
I also used coconut
palm sugar instead of regular — but regular would
work.
The sauce also
works great with coconut
palm sugar or raw turbinado
sugar.
I haven't tried making this recipe with
palm sugar so not sure if that would

I found using a pastry blender
worked well to
work the shortening / butter into the coconut flour and coconut
palm sugar I substituted in place of the honey.
I did use a less refined coconut
palm sugar in this recipe, which in my opinion,
worked even better for sweetening up the apples.
