Most developed countries
support families better than America — which has no comprehensive family policy for paid
parental leave or flexible work, daycare, or early childhood education.
While I would not condone such a law in the US, I would vigorously
support other laws that
support breastfeeding (longer paid
parental leave, for example).
A straw poll commissioned by the Fatherhood Institute has revealed overwhelming
support for a more flexible version of

Four - fifths (79 %) of the 155 respondents
supported the idea of turning part of paid maternity
leave into
parental leave that can be shared by parents.
But the risk is that without attention to the social and cultural realities of raising children in a country that does not offer paid
parental leave, does not invest in quality child care, and in general does not significantly

In terms of Shared
Parental Leave — yes different companies do
support it in different ways.
By creating a customized policy and putting basic elements in place, mother - friendly businesses
support employees to ease the transition back to work after
parental leave while continuing to provide their babies with the very best nutrition.
But as a country, we are still ignoring the issue: we don't require companies to provide paid
parental leave, for instance, and we do little else to
support quality early child care.
Unfortunately, almost none of that could be said to come «naturally» in a society that doesn't always teach men to fully respect or nurture their partners, doesn't provide universal paid
parental leave for all parents, doesn't ensure that all healthcare providers understand what it means to
support mothers» efforts to breastfeed, doesn't teach people what it looks like to establish a nursing relationship, and pushes mothers to put all sorts of other things (financial obligations, social pressures to entertain guests and / or «get their body back») ahead of their postpartum recovery.
Their priorities of
supporting parental leave, flexible working and better child care are also our priorities.
As BBA has long emphasized, bringing our nation into line with our Western peers in terms of such basic family
