The team behind the successful rollout
of the Triple P — Positive
Parenting Program in the Irish Midlands has put its
experiences into an implementation guide for other organisations wanting to improve the quality
of life for children and
parents at a population
level.
That 2014 evaluation determined that a number
of health outcomes for children and
parents changed
at the population
level, including a 37.5 per cent drop in the numbers
of children
experiencing clinically elevated
levels of social, emotional and behavioural problems.
A 2014 Western Australian study found potential impacts on children include: negative emotions
experienced as a result
of the FIFO
parent's absence; increased
levels of behavior problems (particularly amongst boys) when the
parent is away for longer periods; greater
experiences of bullying
at school; and increased pressure to succeed academically.
Compared with control children, they had more difficulties with friendships, 29 poorer theory
of mind, 16 difficulties labelling and understanding the causes
of common emotions, 16 increased fantasy proneness and difficulty distinguishing fantasy and reality, 31 increased negative attributional style, dysfunctional attitudes, rumination and self - criticism.32 They also
experience difficulties in the mother — child relationship, with four studies reporting high
levels of disrupted attachment styles, 21, 29, 31, 32 and in role - play scenarios elevated
levels of role - reversal with
parents, fear
of abandonment, and negative expectations
of parents.31 These factors are known to put children
at risk
of poor mental health outcomes, and indeed, this appears to be the case.

While Rosa did not talk specifically in the Save the Children video about postpartum depression, research shows that stressful life events, including premature birth, are risk factors for maternal depression.24 Evaluation studies confirm that women who participated in home visiting programs were less likely to demonstrate symptoms
of depression and reported improved mental outlook when compared with control groups
of women who did not participate in home visiting.25 For example,
parents participating in the Child First model — one
of the 20 evidence - based models eligible to receive funds from the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting program —
experienced lower
levels of stress and depression
at the end
of the program compared with
parents who did not participate.26

Recent research conducted in mainland China found that obesity prevalence was higher among children in wealthier families, 4 but the patterns were different in Hong Kong with higher rates
of childhood obesity among lower income families.4 5 Hong Kong, despite having a per capita gross domestic product
of Hong Kong dollar (HK$) 273 550, has large income differences between rich and poor as reflected by a high Gini coefficient
of 0.539 reported in 2016; approximately 20 %
of the population are living in poverty as defined by a monthly household income below half
of the Hong Kong median.6 It is widely accepted that population health tend to be worse in societies with greater income inequalities, and hence low - income families in these societies are particularly
at risk
of health problems.7 In our previous study, children from Hong Kong Chinese low - income families
experienced poorer health and more behavioural problems than other children in the population
at similar age.8 Adults from these families also reported poorer health - related quality
of life (HRQOL), 9 with 6.1 %
of the
parents having a known history
of mental illness and 18.2 %
of them reporting elevated
level of stress.

A population approach to
parenting programmes for
parents of adolescents aims to modify
parenting behaviours to produce multiple beneficial health and developmental outcomes for young people
at the population
level.3, 11,41 A population approach can normalize and destigmatize
parenting experiences.
The community base promoted opportunities for a more inclusive, participative approach which was
experienced as helpful by families with differing
levels of need, suggesting that
parenting programmes can be both preventive and restorative,
at least in the short term.
