Escapist and avoidant coping strategies such as distraction have been shown to reduce
anxiety,
fear and pain in situations such as medical procedures (Lee et al., 2012)
or exposure to
feared stimuli (Johnstone and Page, 2004) and could therefore be considered highly adaptive for dealing with these
particular situations.
