This symposium serves to highlight five core themes emerging in the out - of - school time (OST) field: positive youth development as a key frame for child and youth engagement and learning both in school and beyond; the role of mentors and authentic
contexts in supporting diverse populations, in
particular, traditionally underserved and underrepresented children and youth; the need for
meaningful professional development of youth - serving professionals; and the rise of social - emotional skills as a vehicle for 21st century learning.
I read this as an undergraduate with
particular relationship to Chicana / o studies, but it remains critical to me for offering a
meaningful way to understand the inextricably related nature of cultural production, power and
context, something so often elided when we begin to stratify high art and popular culture.
In the course of the interviews, culturally
meaningful and important categories are meant to emerge so that an appropriate idiom or dialogue is developed.49 This approach generally requires a social scientist on the team who has a first hand understanding of the qualitative research methodology involved, as well as staff with a first hand understanding of the communities to understand the group's recent history and cultural
context, and be able to correctly evaluate what norms and values underlie a
particular person's expressed opinion or action.50
