Not exact matches
All this goofiness can hamstring a movie's
emotional beats, and there are a few Ragnarok moments that don't have quite the dramatic pull they should (one early
scene between Thor, Loki and their father, played by Anthony Hopkins,
particularly suffers).
It's these
scenes which have the most
emotional truth and where the film's most successful portions lie, especially when Streep and Jim Broadbent light up the screen with a portrait of a
particularly British and unfussy kind of romantic longing.
So there are plot twists and several good
scenes (I
particularly love how Sartet and Samuel break into the police station to get an incriminating video on a USB), but it is all on one
emotional level.
Frankel's film features pop songs soaring in
emotional scenes, allowing them to swell up
particularly when the characters are alone.
Walken's best
scenes come early in the film,
particularly when he learns the bad news, but he later provides the film's
emotional climax, demonstrating his versatility in a sensitive and physically challenging apart.
While not exactly subtle in a few key
scenes,
particularly those pesky flashbacks that may or may not have drawn the ire of others, the script gives Superman a much needed
emotional context for the superb visual language and iconography Snyder is able to define him through.
Like Jandreau, Scott is re-enacting his own story, and the moments of them together at Lane's rehabilitation center —
particularly a devastating
scene in which Brady helps Lane ride a makeshift «horse» during a therapy session — have a staggering
emotional authenticity.
Their arcs are too blunt at times and wishy - washy at others, but both actors have the parts down so well that they manage to sell just about everything from the amusing banter to some
particularly intense
emotional scenes.
Newell's direction switches smoothly between affecting intimacy and sequences of rowdy chaos; perhaps the film's trump card, however, is its
emotional honesty,
particularly in the poignant and sobering funeral
scene.
