Timber from tropical deforestation, and
particularly illegal deforestation, undercuts landowners who are managing their forests sustainably.
Currently, the main direct causes of
deforestation are generally agreed to be: (i) conversion to agriculture (
particularly to industrial perennial crops); (ii) unsustainable logging (notably
illegal logging); (iii) infrastructure development; and (iv) forest fires.
