De novo SNVs aren't
particularly unusual — typically, a newborn will have about 70 such mutations across the whole genome that weren't inherited from either parent — but by comparing the exomes of many
autistic children, scientists were able to identify the de novo mutations that were consistently associated
with the disorder.
