Those on the shortlist include Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a favorite of progressives who has emerged
as a blistering critic of presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump; Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, a well - liked
lawmaker from an important general election battleground
state; and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro of Texas, a rising star in the Democratic
Party.
But individually,
state lawmakers from both
parties are frustrated with Cuomo, who they view
as mercurial at best and dictatorial at worst.
The
state Conservative
Party has now codified its threat that any
lawmaker who votes «yes» on gay marriage will be politically punished, passing a resolution that
states «any elected official or potential candidate who does not support marriage
as defined between one man and one woman» won't get Row C «in any election».
MacKay's personal endorsement of the legislation was cast
as a counterweight to
state Conservative
Party Chairman Mike Long's pledge to yank the endorsement of any Republican who voted «yes» on the bill, even though MacKay stressed this issue would not be a litmus test for support no matter how a
lawmaker voted.
At the very least, the value of the New York
State Conservative
Party as a stable platform - based wake up call to Republican
lawmakers is very healthy and very realistic.
The governor's absence has fueled suspicion among Democrats that Cuomo, the de facto head of their
party, is siding more closely with Republicans in the
State Senate
as lawmakers negotiate the renewal of rent regulations in New York City.
While he described the return of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to the PDP
as a good omen for the
party, the BoT chairman added that the likes of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki; a former governor of Kano
State, Musa Kwankwaso; Sokoto
State Governor, Waziri Tambuwal, and other
lawmakers would soon return to the
party.
Speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt, the
state capital, on Sunday, the
state Chairman of the APC, Dr. Davies Ikanya, said his
party viewed the burning of the former
lawmaker's house
as the actualisation of the boast by the PDP in the
state that it (PDP) would teach the APC a lesson.
