partner head count.
In the end, with the departures and retirement, equity
partner head count rose by just five people.
In three cases, profitability rose in part because
partner head count declined.

But there's a second factor: Not only did demand drop but firms failed to adjust their hiring policies, resulting in a surge in
head count which couldn't be sustained without
partner profits taking a hit.
But because of growth in
head count and a drop in demand, particularly in the corporate and finance sectors, profits per
partner (PPP) fell by 4.3 percent, to an average of $ 1.26 million, and revenue per lawyer (RPL) dropped 1.2 percent, to $ 818,000.
Its gross revenue has grown 57 percent since fiscal 2013, while its
head count increased 28 percent and its profits per
partner rose 43 percent.
But firms whose lawyer
head count, including
partners, dropped in 2013, in most cases saw a rise in per -
partner profits.»
Seville - Jones says the dip in
head count and equity
partners ranks was not the result of the firm actively thinning its ranks.
But because net income grew — and because all the
head count growth came in the associate ranks — profits per
partner continued to rise.
As for other key financial metrics, the firm's overall attorney
head count decreased by 1.8 percent, or five lawyers, its revenue per lawyer jumped 5.8 percent to $ 640,000, and its profits per
partner rose 3.8 percent to $ 680,000.
In May, DLA Piper became the world's largest firm by attorney
head count after completing a merger with former Down Under alliance
partner DLA Phillips Fox, and British firm Holman Fenwick Willan opened a third Australian office in Perth.
