Here
is Part I of my tips for my earlier self and therefore, all new
indie authors who
are about to publish their first ebook (or even afterward).
Indie authors
are an important
part of the Goodreads community and there
are several ways authors can engage with readers on Goodreads for free, including sharing what you
are reading yourself (Maggie Stiefvater, Rick Riordan, and Roxane Gay
are three great examples of authors who do this), using our «Ask the Author» feature, and providing additional content
about your books with our Kindle Notes & Highlights on Goodreads feature (see how Emma Chase shared notes on her book, Royally Screwed, which led to some great interactions with her fans — authors should contact our author team if they
are interested in doing something like this too).
And yet there
's a
part of me that keeps nagging on

is the time to get in on the ground floor with self - pub POD, before the big companies wise up and move in with faux -
indie offshoots and sponsored writing collectives and the like.

indie authors make, ebook pricing, marketing strategy, and ebook sales.
Still, word has gotten out, and the rumor mill
is going strong (fueled in
part by Hugh Howey)
about how horrible RT
is for treating
indie self - pub authors as «aspiring.»
For Amazon
's part, it
's a bold step to fill its library catalog with
indie authors, a move which speaks volumes
about where the publishing industry may
be headed.
If I
'm not mistaken, the term «
indie» came
about as a way to differentiate between the large conglomerate publishers, who have many layers to their companies and answer to large committees, and the smaller «independent» publishers who weren't a
part of a corporation.
Also, according to The Digital Reader, «Do you know the absolutely crazy
part about the idea of
indie authors
being second - class citizens?
I don't know
about you, but the process of designing a book cover and then seeing the reality
is one of the most satisfying
parts of
indie publishing.
This
is only funny if you know that these
are both
indie authors, and
were part of a group of six best - selling independent authors who banded together to get a booth at BEA (you can read
about them here in Publisher's Weekly).
While you
