Excess minerals, hormones, water and other substances are
passed to the
bladder and
out of the body.
Samples obtained in these ways are adequate for routine testing, but evaluation
of the sample has to be done in light
of the fact that the final product is not necessarily what started
out in the
bladder since the urine
passed through other locations (the prostatic urethra and the penis in a male, or the urethra and vulva in a female) along its way
out.
If possible, stones that are removed surgically or
passed spontaneously should be sent
out for analysis so it can be determined what type
of bladder stone it is.
What happens in incontinence is that urine simply
passes out of the urethra even when the dog doesn't want to or even when the
bladder is not yet full
of urine.
You should also be taking him
out when you think it might be time for him to go because a period
of time has
passed since he last relieved himself or because he's just engaged in activities (napping, eating, drinking, chewing, playing) that typically get his
bladder and bowels moving.
Occasionally these crystals or stones will bass from the
bladder to the urethra, which is the small tube through which urine
passes on its way
out of the cat.
