Is it necessary to distinguish between (1) the idea that all of
the past inheres in the present because the present is what it is because of what the past was, and (2) the preservation of all «values»?
The «immediate activity» is the primary characteristic of the intermediate phase of the occasion; and teleology too
inheres in the intermediate phase: «the occasion arises as an effect facing its
past and ends as a cause facing its future.
