The sad fact is that while many pastors are not in it for the money, they would not be
in pastoral ministry at all if they were not getting paid.
It was the translation I used for most of my growing up years, and did not switch until a few years
into pastoral ministry....
This was obviously not from any lack of scholarly ability on his part, but rather from his prior decision to
pursue pastoral ministry rather than an academic career.
The fundamental work
of pastoral ministry is to foster such a way of life among a particular people.
In his resignation letter, he is quick to point out there were «no charges of criminal activity, immorality or heresy, any of which could clearly be grounds for disqualification
from pastoral ministry.»
In an address that is hard not to read as a rebuke of the Roman Curia, Pope Francis delivered a searching reflection
on pastoral ministry to a gathering of Italian bishops at St. Peter's Basilica this evening.
If you
love pastoral ministry, and you decide to leave, you will experience a similar sense of loss, and maybe even despair, depression, and feelings of uselessness.
He has a breadth of vocational experience,
including pastoral ministry, social work, teaching, management and working in labouring gangs.
Says Robert Kohler an executive with the United Methodist Church: «Instead of a [clergy] shortage or crisis, I see a changing profile in
pastoral ministry with an intentional use of more full - and part - time local pastors to address the needs for clergy.»
In the same maner I would think a bit longer before diminishing the rol of
pastoral ministries not to mention the commandment of baptism and the most beautiful practice of remember Christ sacrifice through communion.
And these pastors are glad when someone says that, because in our society — and even in the church — the malignant assumption that
pastoral ministry does not really demand or require very much surreptitiously undermines both our legitimate expectations of and our sense of gratitude for the Christian ministry.
They leave unexplored the social and cultural changes of the past 50 years and the possibility that these changes have made
pastoral ministry more difficult as well as different.
I will write some posts later this week about how this can happen, but for now, think about the freedom and flexibility you would enjoy in
pastoral ministry if you did not have to worry about a paycheck from the church.
We first became acquainted as students at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, but inner -
city pastoral ministries brought us together in a far more consequential way a few years later.
But such forgiveness has to be distinguished from the question of whether it would be responsible to entrust to him anew the
normal pastoral ministry of a priest.
Pastors who had left ministry under circumstances not of their own choosing or who felt that they had in some way been mistreated mourned the loss of
pastoral ministry most intensely.
The minister's caring symbolizes the caring of the religious community and of God and is expressed in many ways — for example, a friendly word as people leave the worship service, a congratulatory note when a member is honored by his company, a visit to welcome a new family to the community, and the
vital pastoral ministries in the pivot points and crises of life — marriage, birth, death, confirmation, sickness, accidents, and so forth.
These issues can be even more difficult for introverts who were drawn to
pastoral ministry because they romanticized its study aspects.
