This image was observed with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) gri - band filters mounted on the Blanco 4 - meter telescope on Dec. 28, 2015, around the time when the supernova reached
its peak luminosity.
This allowed them to improve the accuracy of the derived distances of these galaxies, and thus to more accurately calibrate
the peak luminosities of their Type Ia supernovae.

Similar to all supernovae, the
luminosity of metal - poor supernovae show a characteristic rise to a
peak brightness followed by a decline.
«So far we have doubled the
peak and average «
luminosity» - measures that are directly related to the collision rates,» said Wolfram Fischer, Associate Chair for Accelerators of Brookhaven's Collider - Accelerator Department and lead author on a paper describing the success just published in Physical Review Letters.
The YSO mass function (MF), constructed using a theoretical mass -
luminosity relation, shows
peaks at substellar (~ 0.08 - 0.18 Msolar) and intermediate (~ 1 - 1.78 Msolar) mass ranges for the IRS 1 - 3 region.
The
peak absolute
luminosity appears to be about 50,000 times the
luminosity of the Sun, but the largest percentage of known open clusters has a brightness equivalent to 500 solar
luminosities.
