In my opinion, both the book and the movie versions of «Fifty Shades of Grey» (originally «Master of the Universe,» a «Twilight» fan fiction
penned by Snowqueens Icedragon, who has since adopted the
pen name E.L. James) have generated
far more attention, money, and drama than they're worth.
I released three books so
far (under a new
pen name) and I'm having a blast, even if my numbers don't reflect it.
However, since I'm writing under a
pen name It's kind of hard marketing it (this would have been
far more easier if I used my real
name).
Before I go
further, I should disclose that I am not in KDP Select with any of the books under my
name, but that my
pen name is currently «all in» with KDP Select.
To
further obscure / protect the people mentioned in your book, consider hiding your own identity using a
pen name.
Every draft send gets one shot, and the reader goes as
far as (s) he possibly can; if it's good, it's talked about — and if you need a better
name for the author, be it famous or just a classy - sounding
pen -
name, that's the easiest thing to arrange; famous people are always delighted to sign and promote a good book, especially if someone else took the pain to write it — shadow writer is not an insult here: people are open and proud about it, see «Mensonges et trahisons et plus si affinités...».
To
further illustrate: suppose the landlord's
name is Larry, the property manager's
name is Alice, and lease form says «Landlord sign here:...» Alice could get a
pen and write «Larry» there, and that would be a valid lease executed by the landlord as
far as the law is concerned.
