The show's more than fifty works included important canvases from private and public
collections, but the most spectacular inclusions, in many ways, were the works
on paper, ranging from intimate
pencil studies with little or no color to pastel and crayon - enriched images, as complete as paintings; many of these had rarely — if ever — been exhibited before.
Beside these personal pieces of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s are two untitled works in
pencil on paper of 1916 by Kazimir Malevich — part of David Whitney's personal
collection and an obvious link to both men's appreciation of the earliest stages of Modern art in the 20th Century.
Works
on view range from Adonna Khare's massive 40 - foot - long carbon
pencil drawing Elephants (2012), to Andy Warhol's colorful Endangered Species prints to a rare
collection of sketches by modern dance choreographer and innovator Merce Cunningham, among others, several of which are works
on paper and thus rarely
on exhibit.
The
collection consists of 384 drawings, cartoons, and caricatures, primarily
pencil on paper, by Goodridge Roberts.
