penguin guano extracted in sediment cores from a lake on the island, the researchers unraveled the history of the penguin colony.

«If you dig into an active
penguin colony, the sediments will be jet black and tarry and gooey — that's just degrading
guano and pebbles,» says Emslie.

penguins from snow, shadow and
