There sin is a deep, inward defilement; goodness is an interior fountain of spiritual quality;
penitence concerns what a man is behind what he does; and the desire for a good life calls out the prayer for spiritual rebirth,
(Judges 10:9 - 10) At the first, therefore,
penitence was a public rather than a private matter, and the sense of sin
concerned the violated customs of the social group rather than the inner quality of the individual.
