In cases where a person's
entitlement to
pension is being established on the social insurance record of someone who started paying self - employment social insurance contributions on 6 April 1988 (the date of introduction of PRSI for the self - employed)
then entitlement can be calculated based on the social insurance record from that date (even if there are employment contributions paid before that date).
In cases where a person's self - employment social insurance contributions are being used to establish
entitlement to
pension, if that person did not pay at least one year's self - employment contributions before the relevant date,
then none of their self - employment contributions can be used to establish
entitlement (see note 1).
