Most
people would probably agree that astronomy is an inspiring subject, blowing our minds with astonishing facts
about exploding stars, extrasolar planets and supermassive
black holes while beguiling our eyes with awesome vistas of alien worlds and distant galaxies.

I'm also talking
about the writer who turns an entire country into tragedy porn, going to volunteer at an orphanage and using brown kids as props in their photos or writing
about how sad and poor everyone in Haiti is, with no mention of history, race, and politics, and then leaving a link for
people to donate to the Red Cross, where their money will surely disappear into a
black hole along with all the other Red Cross donations that are unaccounted for.
That's the opportunity to name drop, or better yet, see if that
person is willing to take a copy of your resume and pass it along to the hiring manager or the recruiter who's in charge of that position, because then you're bypassing that electronic gatekeeper, or the big
black hole that everyone's scared
about, and allowed to get on to the hiring manager so that you have a better shot at getting that job, or at least getting an interview, so to your point, you can make your case in
person or on the phone.
So you have to stop sending your resume into the
black hole of cyberspace, and use the tools to research and find the companies you're interested in and the job you're interested in and the
person you should talk to
about that job.
