gangster he gradually expanded the scope of his roles, and, in the»40s, gave memorable «good guy»
performances as in a number of psychological dramas; he played federal agents, scientists, Biblical characters, business men, bank clerks, among other characters.
It's a finely tuned Motor City engine: The action, including a nighttime car chase through a blinding snowstorm, is fast, brutal and efficient; the Motown soundtrack never cuts out; and
as a
gangster called Sweet, the British - Nigerian actor Chiwetel Ejiofor gives an electrifying
performance.
I'd say the true star of the film is Josh Brolin, who has proved in the past few years that he can do many things, such
as giving an Oscar - caliber
performance in Milk (which also stars
Gangster Squad's Sean Penn), do an uncanny Tommy Lee Jones impression in Men In Black III, and proves here that he can dish up a good dash of old - fashioned rough - and - tough heroism.
Lee Valmassy has a lot of fun letting loose
as the gleefully farcical villain (a mohawked, golden - grilled
gangster who only wears jumpsuits), and Art Hsu turns in a scene - stealing
performance as the hero's duck - loving sidekick, but while fans of bad movies might appreciate what «The FP» has to offer, it's not exactly the ready - made cult classic that it's so desperately trying to be.
Add to this four iconic
performances (five if you count the inimitable Tom Georgeson
as cockernee
gangster George «Unbe - fackin» - lieveable!»
William H. Macy stars (in a
performance that should be considered for an Oscar)
as a hit man named Alex working for his
gangster father (Donald Sutherland).
The only reason to truly see Snitch is to take in the
performance of Michael Kenneth Williams
as the
gangster Malik.
Penn gives it large
as a cartoon
gangster but his
performance just serves to remind us that this isn't a film to take particularly seriously.
Both Robinson and Fred MacMurray played roles against type (Robinson gained notoriety for his role
as a
gangster in Little Caesar (1930), and MacMurray had previously played genial, lightweight, good - guy roles in comedies)- and their
performances represented some of their best career work.
It stars Dustin Hoffman (74)
as a weary
gangster, his first lead role in a television series (he won an Emmy in 1986 for his
performance as Willy Loman in a television adaptation of Death of a Salesman), Nick Nolte (70)
as a trainer for whom the word grizzled appears to have been created and eye - catching supporting roles for Michael Gambon (71) and Dennis Farina (67).
Although Chazelle should get the lion's share of the credit
as to why the film works, that shouldn't take away from the phenomenal
performances, not only in acting, but also in singing, dancing, and playing instruments, to Crazy Stupid Love and
Gangster Squad cast - mates Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, who took over the roles from the originally pitched Emma Watson (who was iffy on the project before ultimately being unavailable) and Whiplash star Miles Teller (who, reportedly, lost the gig trying to stall for a bigger paycheck).
As for Gosling, his
performance here is exactly like his
performances in Drive and
Gangster Squad, The Ides of March and The Place Beyond the Pines, only even more minimalistic.
Both are drawn to the head
gangster of South Boston, played by Jack Nicholson (in a
performance that starts restrained and becomes weirder and more «Jack»
as the film's sense of paranoid hysteria increases), and both have legit cops
as potential father figures: DiCaprio has the ideal good father in Martin Sheen, Damon has amoral (and hilarious) company man Alec Baldwin, in a less frightening variation on his great Glengarry Glen Ross
performance.
Woody Harrelson also gives a memorable knockout
performance as the bad guy, a psychopathic
gangster whose beloved pet dog the main characters have mistakenly stolen.
She is an artist who makes extensive use of homemade props and costumes and might be known to some
as the artist who had people dressed up
as blubbery seals at the Frieze art fair in 2010; or for a 2003
performance piece in which she recast Return of the Jedi
gangster Jabba the Hutt
as a cocktail - loving smooth guy.
