The rack - and - pinion steering and column are isolated from the chassis (and therefore the oscillating suspension) by a front -
perimeter subframe with generous couplings at all points.
At the front, a new
perimeter subframe helps to stiffen the structure while reducing mass, providing a better foundation for more predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering and ride.
So they swapped it for a double - ball - joint independent setup with MacPherson struts attached to a new
perimeter subframe that's stiffer and lighter.
