of answers to those
questions, and we'll pursue our discipline
on behalf
of those who share our full - cycle
perspective, but every investor should ask those
questions seriously.
In a fascinating historical treatment, Holy Scripture and the Quest for Authority at the End
of the Middle Ages, Ian Christopher Levy offers a new
perspective on this
question.
It certainly may try, and even if it hits
on the truth
of the matter, since the human is a Mystery unto Itself (and set within the context
of Ultimate Mystery), are we not left with a great many
perspectives on the matter, which might indicate that a more tentative approach may be the best way to go regarding the
question of the OP, so as to make room for those who are just as caught up in the Mystery as we ourselves are?
Last week you submitted over 300
questions for Wright, but we could only pick 6 as our esteemed guest is busy wrapping up work
on the much - anticipated Paul and the Faithfulness
of God and its two companion volumes, Pauline
Perspectives and Paul and His Recent Interpreters.
I wanted to get a diversity
of perspectives in response to this
question, so I contacted several folks whose opinion
on matters related to sexuality I respect, and asked them this
question:
The latter is a tangled problem at best, but it is clear that among the important founders
of the process
perspective — specifically I mean James, Peirce, Bergson, Whitehead, Dewey, and Hartshorne — it is Hartshorne's work which comes closest to being a kind
of personalism.1 Whitehead explicitly sets aside the personalist
perspective in Religion in the Making, considering its claims beyond the possibility
of being established.2
On the other side, a number
of personalists have been sympathetic to process thought, and Brightman is surely principal among them.3 Here I will not investigate the
question of whether personalism in general, or even the idealistic type, is reconcilable with process thought.
The great uniqueness
of Niebuhr, his social science
perspective on theological
questions, is constantly deprecated by him; or else, when in one
of his self - depreciative moods, he claims he is not a theologian.
Returning then to the
question of how the
perspective on religion set forth in The Sacred Canopy is to be evaluated, given more than two decades
of hindsight, it would appear evident that this
perspective still contains much
of importance to the contemporary situation.
Even if such preposterousness could be overcome, there would remain all
of the
questions of why
perspective would not totally determine interpretation, as would happen if interactions were sheerly physical, and
of how good art and good criticism would be distinguished from bad.9 Clearly, art and its impact can not be understood without some allowance for its status as an imaginative reality, a status deeply dependent
on art's physicalness, but not reducible to physicalness.
Yet, now an answer to the epistemological side
of this
question is also available (or at least a
perspective on it).

on these
questions can be found in my essays

questions and encourage thought
on the part
of people who come from other
perspectives as well.
After his careful analysis
of the roots
of Augustine's thinking
on the just society, he leaves it to the reader to speculate as to how his
perspective relates to the larger
questions posed by his theme.
The goals

of the Russian Orthodox Church has felt sometimes the WCC has not placed its thinking
on the social content
of salvation solidly within the
perspective of the ultimate goal
of salvation... the eternal life in God, «with the result that appropriation
of eternal life is made to depend
on social conditions rather than social conditions
on the appropriation
of eternal life»; and the Ecumenical Patriarchate has warned us that in «turning towards the anguish
of the man today», the WCC must not forget the basic truth that man sees himself as hungering for an answer to a basic
question over and beyond his acute interest in the most vital socio - political problems
of the day.»
Either American democracy is living
on social capital inherited from an earlier time when Americans shared a common
perspective on life's
questions, in which case we face a slow descent into the fragmented and violent world Hauerwas sees; or else the enthusiastic, individualistic and yet genuinely loving piety
of Emerson, Whitman and Ellison has a better grasp
of our human nature, and it really is possible to be both democratic and virtuous.
Hartshorne consequently raises the following
question regarding the aim
of life: «Be the aim Nirvana, the Classless Society, the Welfare State, Self - Realization, the query is never silenced, what good is it, from the cosmic and everlasting
perspective, that one or other or all
of these aims be attained for a time
on this ball
of rock?»
It's a great
perspective, and it reminded me
of some
of the
questions I asked myself before embarking
on my Lenten journey.
We must now examine more closely the
perspective in which Ricoeur carries
on his project
of opening the way for the text
of Scripture to restore the «interval
of interrogation» in which the
question of faith can be heard.
Hence we are,
on the one hand, confronted with an abundance
of material, rich in analysis and content from a variety

He spoke movingly
of how he had first had to come to terms with these
questions when reporting
on sexual abuse
of minors in a Protestant missionary agency, and how the past year's reporting
on the Catholic situation had posed for him painful ethical dilemmas with respect to issues
of confidentiality,
perspective, and the dangers
of playing to stereotypes.
T.M.Philip's essay in it
on «A History
of Baptismal Practices and Theologies» points to a wide variety
of practice and understanding that existed in the churches from NT times and says that the historical
perspective would help us «to maintain a certain flexibility and openness in the light
of the new
questions and challenges presented by our present historical situation».
