pet runs out of food during their stay with us, we will feed a bland
diet equivalent, unless your
pet is
on a special
prescription diet food (in which case we would continue with their prescribed
diet as we carry most of them in stock).
When bladder and urinary tract infections occur in
pets, a veterinarian's first reaction is to prescribe antibiotics along with a
prescription diet and send them
on their way.
For instance, the allergy tests available are not terribly good at determining food allergies, and therefore instead of identifying a specific food and avoiding it, we instead recommend feeding a
prescription hypoallergenic
diet on a strict trial basis (feed this and nothing else), while gauging to see how your
pet responds.
Note: A
prescription diet is needed for the test because over-the-counter
diets are not considered trial foods since
pet food companies often use ingredients that are not listed
on the label.
Is your
pet on a special or
prescription diet?
When all else fails, you may need to consider one of two options: putting your
pet on a
prescription medication /
diet, and / or examining more carefully whether there is an underlying medical reason your puppy is finding it hard to lose the weight.
If your

prescription diet, consider having a 4 week supply since it may be difficult to go back home promptly after a storm or there may be short term delays in delivery.

If your

prescription diet, check to make sure you have enough for the entire length of stay if the boarding facility doesn't provide it.
Several
prescription diets exist
on the market to meet the dietary needs of

It does not take into account the special dietary requirements for puppies and kittens, pregnant or nursing animals, giant breed dogs, working dogs,
pets needing to lose or gain weight, or
