Petechia refers to very small, flat red or purple spots that appear on the skin. These spots are caused by broken capillary blood vessels and are usually a result of certain medical conditions, such as infections, bleeding disorders, or certain medications.
Full definition
By analysing bird faeces for beetle DNA, the team identified the yellow warbler (
Setophaga petechia) and four other species as beetle eaters.
Low platelet counts associated with infection result in speckles
called petechiae, which may or may not be externally visible.
How to treat it: If your baby's
petechiae appears after some physical trauma, it should go away after a few days — but if you are not sure what caused it, then you should bring her to seek medical attention.
You can identify if your little one has
petechiae by applying gentle pressure on the spots and if they don't turn pale (non-blaching) then this will confirm her skin condition.
As vitamin C deficiency progresses, collagen synthesis becomes impaired and connective tissues become weakened,
causing petechiae, ecchymoses, purpura, joint pain, poor wound healing, hyperkeratosis, and corkscrew hairs [1,2,4,6 - 8].
Hi there I would like to share my Maltese girl had a bruising red and purple and diagnosed here
with petechia, very low platelets that causes her to bleed under the skin... That's pretty scary.
As mentioned
above petechiae or ecchymoses or epistaxis are not uncommon, but bleeding into the lungs, pleural space, or CNS is very rare without concurrent trauma.
After screening DNA from 229 yellow warblers (
Setophaga petechia) in 21 diverse populations across North America, researchers led by Rachael Bay at the University of California, Los Angeles, identified the genes as having the strongest effect on survival (Science, DOI: 10.1126 / science.aan4380).
Tiny red dots on the skin,
called petechiae, occur when the smallest blood vessels in the body, called capillaries, bleed into the skin.
Further studies have shown that infants who have been exposed to breast milk with aspirin have developed Thrombocytopenia, fever, anorexia and
petechiae.
A non-blanching skin rash (a rash that doesn't go away when you press on it)- A non-blanching skin rash, in contrast to those that branch, may be
petechiae, small points of bleeding under the skin
Most rashes on your baby are not serious, but if you notice blisters with puss or
petechiae, see a doctor immediately.

The yellow warbler (Setophaga
petechia) is a pest - eating bird that frequents coffee plantations.
Infected puppies uniformly have low platelet counts and may show red spots called «
petechiae» which actually represent small bruises.
Results: Poor blood clotting ability, skin bruising (
petechia and ecchymosis), internal hemorrhage, death.
The mucous membranes should be examined closely for pallor (extreme or unnatural paleness), icterus (jaundice),
petechiae (pinpoint flat round red spots under the skin surface caused by intradermal hemorrhage), and ulceration, because these indications could be of anemia or thrombocytopenia (low blood platelet count) secondary to myelophthisis or immune mediated disease or may be evidence of a major organ failure.
These bruises are called
petechia, and they may develop into larger bruises.
