Drawing from the National Museum of Women in the Arts collection, this show features
photography and video works
by 17 artists focusing their camera on the female body as a vital medium for storytelling, expressing identity and reflecting individual and collective
experience.
The exhibition highlights the power and complexity of contemporary Indigenous
photography, and the way in which Indigenous artists draw upon a rich mixture of history, personal
experience, blak humour, as well as postmodern and postcolonial theories, in order to generate new perspectives and understandings of the social, political and cultural conditions faced
by Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
By honoring the intimate relationships that individuals compose with places through
experience and ancestral recognition, a space of questioning
photography, both as a discipline and as a tool, is accessed.
Marking the culmination of a year - long celebration of
photography at the museum, this installation brings together an exquisite group of gifts, ranging from innovative photographs made in the earliest years of the medium's history to key works
by important 20th - century artists and contemporary pieces that examine the ways in which
photography continues to shape our
experience of the modern world.
Mickalene Thomas and LaToya Ruby Frazier use
photography to document black life in America and move Parks» idiom further
by inserting family members, friends, lovers and themselves into the work, creating images that speak to both personal
experience and more broadly to relationships, class, and equality.

Artist Statement My work seeks to rethink the tropes of
photography by replacing the more common process of peering through a lens with a more immediate, physical
experience.
Other works in the exhibition include Jorge Pardo's handcrafted wooden palette and modernist designed furniture that question the nature of the aesthetic
experience; pioneering conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth's discourse on aesthetics in neon, An Object Self - Defined, 1966; Rachel Lachowicz's 1992 row of urinals cast in red lipstick, which delivers a feminist critique of Duchamp's readymade; Richard Pettibone's paintings of photographs of Fountain; Richard Phillips» recent paintings based on Gerhard Richter's highly valued work; Miami artist Tom Scicluna's neon sign, «Interest in Aesthetics,» a critique of the use of aesthetics in Fort Lauderdale's ordinance on homelessness; the French collaborative Claire Fontaine's lightbox highlighting Duchamp's critical comments about art juries; Corey Arcangel's video Apple Garage Band Auto Tune Demonstration, 2007, which tweaks the concept of aesthetics in the digital age; Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographs, Four Water Towers, 1980, that reveal the potential for aesthetic choices within the same typological structures; and works
by Elad Lassry and Steven Baldi, who explore the aesthetic history of
photography.
Painting, sculpture and
photography collide with video installation in this healthy mix of practices, thematically linked
by the collective
experiences of our surroundings expressed through a variety of media.
Since that time, she has continued to explore portraiture as well as produce landscape images inspired
by her study of iconic imagery from art history, painting and landscape
photography, as seen through the lens of her own
experience of identity and culture.
Organized
by the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Betye Saar: Extending the Frozen Moment, examines the achievement of Betye Saar
by focusing on her work with
photography, specifically, her incorporation of photographic fragments as a metaphor for her view of the African American
experience and of lives too often obscured in American visual history.
The installation of the works is of equal importance to the selection of images:

Working in painting,
photography, sculpture and video, the participating artists offer views of the self, each stressing the importance of self - discovery to their own work and how it is
experienced by the viewer.
