The first major museum
show ever devoted to the
great French actress will illuminate her life and art through painting, sculpture,
photography, costumes, jewelry, stage designs, her furniture and personal effects, as well as selected films and recordings.
Including sculpture, painting, installation and
photography, the
show explores the diverse cultural influences and thriving creative practices in the two
great continents that were once conjoined as the prehistoric landmass of Pangaea.
The
show will span a vast array of media: oil on canvas, wood sculpture, porcelain,
photography and installation, it will offer a visual experience of
great variety, complexity and wonderment.
Without a doubt one of the year's
greatest art
shows, Some New Painting (and
Photography) will run through January 10, 2015.
Indeed, much of Marino's work for this
show plays against the notion that
photography inherently carries a
greater sense of reality than other artistic mediums.
Masterpieces of painting and sculpture are
shown with
great works of
photography, drawing and decorative arts by and for Americans of many backgrounds.
But even if I would have preferred fewer inclusions — or a series of
shows breaking out different mediums, especially
photography and ceramics — all in all, it's pretty good and includes some
great work.
