It is this innovation that distinguishes these portrait

Making herself up, Cindy Sherman — style, as dozens of archetypal Japanese personas, Sawada repeatedly sat for her
photo - booth portrait and then rephotographed the results, multiplying nearly 400 versions of herself by four and installing the black - and - white strips on the
walls of New York's Zabriskie
Gallery,
in grids of 100
photos each.
A small
photo on the
gallery wall revealed their source: a famous
photo from the Stroop Report, an album commissioned by commander of German forces that suppressed the Warsaw ghetto uprising
in the spring of 1943.
The silvery monochrome also meshes nicely with the selection of six big, abstract, heavily worked graphite drawings push - pinned to
walls elsewhere
in the
gallery; large
photo - collages of multicolored boats are upstairs.
A freestanding
wall on either end of the
gallery frames the space, one covered with handwritten testimonials from the sitters
in the
photos («Here

Making all the
photos black and white is an easy way to give consistency to
photos in any grouping, whether that be a
gallery wall or a Christmas card.
I prefer to call it a
photo wall, because to me
gallery walls contain objects,
photos, etc and are usually placed
in a random pattern.
