That Anne's mental and
physical degradation unfurls with the severity
of serious horror was perhaps a sly aesthetic decision, but it also feels intensely, in
fact almost perversely, overdetermined; one can never shake the feeling that by magnifying
death's ugliest qualities from a «measured» emotional remove, Amour is simply following the path
of least resistance to achieving its desired visceral effect.
Haneke's camera is scrupulously avoidant
of anything remotely approaching exploitation or cruelty, but it doesn't flinch for a moment from the harsh
physical and emotional realities
of the dreadful situation, its confusion and loss and humiliation; that kind
of unremitting honesty, however — that kind
of acknowledgment
of the painful, irremediable
fact of death — makes for the most stirring, principled, and meaningful illustration possible
of the truest meaning
of love, the kind that goes much deeper and wider, and endures longer, than romance or joy or even togetherness.
Most
of all, though, there is the
fact that Jeffrey Tambor, with whom he starred in Armando Iannucci's satire, The
Death of Stalin, is among the ever - growing list
of men who now stand accused
of sexual misconduct (Tambor, who has denied any wrongdoing, left the award - winning TV series Transparent last November, following allegations
of inappropriate language and
physical contact).
Whether or not the
death of the
physical bookstore is imminent, the
fact remains that at present, a big chunk
of book sales occurs offline.
This particular entry doesn't quite fall into that trap — it at least throws in the title and iconic status
of «The
Physical Impossibility
of Death in the Mind
of Someone Living», but the
fact that it doesn't give any real information just made me think
of all the times that I have seen pictures that are never referenced in the text.
