The mass slaying at the hands of a student gunman at Virginia Polytechnic Institute have revived vexing questions and raised familiar fears for K - 12 educators across the country who grapple daily with ensuring
the physical safety of their students and staff.

On May 13, 2010, the PPE Campaign and Coalition for Youth Sports Health and
Safety was launched to promote the widespread adoption and consistent use
of an updated preparticipation
physical evaluation form (PPE) for pre-competition medical screening
of U.S.
student - athletes.
School health is a comprehensive multi-component approach for addressing the
physical, emotional and mental health needs
of students and staff - including nutrition,
physical activity, school and
student safety, staff wellness, healthy relationships, school climate and connectedness and many others.

of disrespectful and mean behavior from other

physical or psychological threat — and their recognition
of positive and appropriate relationships with adults at school.
When
students feel both
physical and emotional
safety, school climates become absent
of adultism, other discrimination, harassment and exclusion.

students a comprehensive school health education that address a variety
of topics such as alcohol and other drug use and abuse, healthy eating / nutrition, mental and emotional health, personal health and wellness,
physical activity,
safety and injury prevention, sexual health, tobacco use, and violence prevention.
They are responsible for the
physical, intellectual and emotional
safety of the
students in their classrooms.
In the classroom, as on the playing field, public schools should have policies and procedures in place to protect the
physical safety and facilitate the educational progress
of students reasonably suspected
of having sustained one or more concussions.
