The strength of Charles Frazier's National Book
Award - winning source material lies in its socio - political details of America's Civil War period, but Minghella has focused his
picture unerringly on the overrated novel's weaknesses
instead: its dialogue, its clumsy Homeric riff (for better country - fried Odyssey, stick to O Brother Where Art Thou?)

This year the Academy broke with the illogic of recent
award ceremonies by giving Oscar to the people who directed the Best
Picture instead of splitting the honor.
But as we guessed (and hoped), the move was not a case of the studio dumping the
picture, but
instead, making sure that what they see as a possible
awards season contender has the best debut possible.
Instead, the evening will belong to Slumdog Millionaire which I predict will win Best
Picture and Best director, netting an impressive 7 Academy
Awards overall, despite the fact that it isn't up for anything in the acting categories.
