picture of a domed canopy over the sky, supported by pillars, with a
flat earth below floating on a watery abyss, with sun, moon and stars moving in the heavens relative to the
earth, and with the world axis intersecting the sacred center
of one's nation.
There you will find in the end the same general
picture of the universe which the Hebrews held, but their fellow Semites in Babylonia got at it by having the god, Marduk, slit his enemy, Tiamat, in two, like a
flat fish, and then use the upper half to make the sky and the lower half to make the
earth.
The
flat earth, with the heavens a little way above, and the sun and stars shining for no other purpose than to illumine man — that
picture put man at the center
of everything.
But that ascent -
of - man
picture is looking as dated as the
flat earth.
By picking one specific area
of only one
of the spheres (surface temperatures), while it might be one piece
of interesting information and it certainly it is quite true that surface temperatures have been
flat at or near record high levels, focusing on this fact alone and the fact that climate models failed to have forecast it, does very little overall good if the goal is to educate the public about the bigger
picture, i.e. anthropogenic climate change as an energy imbalance affecting the whole
Earth energy system, including all the spheres discussed above.
