Along with dualistic mythology several developments in scientific thought since the seventeenth century have contributed to the exorcism
of mind
from nature: first, there is the cosmography
of classical (Newtonian) physics
picturing our world as composed
of inanimate, unconscious bits
of «matter» needing only the brute laws
of inertia to explain their action; second, the Darwinian theory
of evolution with its emphasis on chance, waste and the apparent «impersonality»
of natural selection; third, the laws
of thermodynamics (and particularly the second law) with the allied cosmological interpretation that our universe is running out
of energy available to sustain life, evolution and human consciousness; fourth, the geological and astronomical disclosure
of enormous tracts
of apparently lifeless space and matter in the universe; fifth, the recent suggestions that life may be reducible to an inanimate chemical basis; and, finally, perhaps most shocking
of all, the suspicion that mind may be explained exhaustively in terms
of mindless brain chemistry.

And, as much as vegans wouldn't want to admit it, if the human species returned to a more literal Paleo
picture — actually hunting for actual wild animals when necessary (and eating them fresh), making animal foods just a part
of the overall diet, and eating no refined plants (like white flour or white rice, which don't exist in
nature), a couple things would happen: (1) we could put an end to the horrific treatment
of animals in the factory farming industry, and (2) the environmental devastation that results
from our current food production model would be substantially minimized.

of receptive surfaces on which to record, collect, or index the direct imprint
of elements
from the real world is especially central to the artist's pre-1955 works.11 Leo Steinberg's celebrated 1972 article «Reflections on the State
of Criticism» isolated this particular approach to surface as collection point as the singular contribution
of Rauschenberg's works
of the early 1950s, one which galvanized a new position within postwar art. 12 Steinberg coined the term «flatbed
picture plane» to account for this radical shift, through which «the painted surface is no longer the analogue
of a visual experience
of nature but
of operational processes.»
The Meyerhoff - Becker Collection also includes work by photographers who explore the
nature of the medium itself by appropriating imagery
from mass media and other sources to create often carefully staged
pictures.
Rauschenberg's use

In his explanation
of In - Between, provided in full at the end
of this press release, he states: «The aesthetic
of In - Between borrows
from pictures of destruction - destruction by violence, by war, by accident, by
nature, by structural failures, by corruption, by fatality.
This transformation
of the
picture plane was «expressive
of the most radical shift in the subject matter
of art, the shift
from nature to culture.»
