All the devices in Stella's new paintings are geared to make
picture space feel as if it bites into real space, without using illusionistic depth.

Thomas excels at furnishing these
spaces with the touches and details that make them
feel like someone's home — here there are small curios, framed
pictures, wood paneling on the walls and floors, and a series of cast bronze clothing items, all former possessions of her mother.
The diffused sprayed layers don't
feel like a specific
picture plane, instead they are a
space where parts of the painting can act or perform.
I think the
picture looks idyllic, and I
feel like a Luddite, but putting apartments for 10,000 in that open
space in the middle of the city
feels worse than the multi-use that takes place there now.
If you're
feeling lazy you simply ask XaoS to conjure up a random starting
picture and dive in from there; or for those times when even this is too much trouble (Friday afternoon, say), simply put the thing on automatic pilot and watch as you fly through scenery that out Kubrick's the 2001
Space Oddyssy.
The greenery on the
picture frames totally made the
space feel so much for festive.
So, as
pictured at the top of this post, I thought I would make my comeback to blogging by showing you one of the only
spaces that actually
feels complete so far in the townhouse, our entry hallway!
I figured if I got two of them and used them together lengthwise like a built in screen, they would almost fill the
space in the mantel and would loosely give the same
feel as my inspiration
picture.
I appreciated the many
pictures because I was able to capture the
feeling of the
space, as well.
Bifold windows were built into the extension, creating further
feeling of
space and working as a
picture frame on to the garden.
Once it arrived I was very underwhelmed, I just wasn't
feeling it for the
space and I couldn't help but
picture little Zoe bonking into it in the future.
One thing that helps me in the process is to start to
picture what I want the
space to
feel like and how the design will fit into the overall direction of my home.
I
feel so lucky to have this little
space to relax, get inspired and create in!The
pictures below are of the
space before I added the wall to make it a private little apartment.
I had trouble deciding what to do with the
space where the island is now, so I completely understand that it could
feel awkward to some — especially in
pictures.
A
picture with a distant scene of nature will evoke the
feeling of
space.
Hanging a simple
picture or wall decor even if we weren't sure if we would move it later, these things made a big difference in how we
felt in the new
space.
We added a pair of mirrors flanking the bar area to make the
space feel larger and reflect light from the large
picture window.
Sometimes I find it discouraging to look at
pictures of perfectly designed
spaces because there's not a single room in my home that I
feel is finished.
A terra cotta pot, woven basket, brass vintage
picture frames, wood cutting boards and chair draw the eye down and keep the
space from
feeling cold and stark.
I've finally gotten around to making this
space feel more in line with the rest of our home, starting with a new bed which is
pictured and a new rug that sadly did not make it in time for this shoot.
A frosty green glass lamp on the table, and lots of white in slipcovers, pillows, and
picture frames was all that was needed to make this little
space feel warm - weather ready.
