So how do you review what is, in essence,
a piece of film criticism?
Not exact matches
Anyone familiar with the more intellectual forms
of pop
criticism (whether
of music or
film) will recognize it as a parody
of the Rolling Stone critic — a parody so good that, for a moment, one is almost convinced the
piece is the real thing:
The
film reviews are concise, thoughtful, and well - rounded
pieces of pop
film criticism — especially those by Todd McCarthy.
The Congress is a brilliant
piece of animation and a clever
piece of cinematic
film criticism but in order to convince it needed to be either more humane or more intellectually rigorous.
These people also read the Pauline Kael's and the Andrew Sarris's and publishers would publish very long
pieces of thoughtful
film criticism all over the place.
Among the certainties in the world
of film criticism — there will be a series
of pieces bemoaning critics» inability to stop a terrible summer
film from becoming a blockbuster; Armond White will often stake out a position in opposition to many
of his fellow critics; movies about middle - aged men having their mid-life crises sorted out by women well out
of their league will always receive mostly kind notices; etc. — there's one that stands above all others.
The extent to which a parent is able to fulfill this obligation is the extent to which The Pagemaster is worthwhile; using this
film as an eighty - minute babysitter - cum - opiate negates any possible positive effect conferred by the picture — raising the question, clearly,
of how best to approach
criticism of the
piece.
But now, «boring» is hot, at least in overheated Interwebular
film criticism circles, since the publication
of Dan Kois» New York Times Magazine
piece called «Eating Your Cultural Vegetables,» in which he says:
It didn't affect the Oscar nominations, since voting closed prior to its publication — but it is a potent
piece of writing that went beyond
criticism, calling into judgment the voting bodies that have heaped so much praise on the
film already.
«Jurassic Park» remains an essential
piece of my childhood, serving as a reminder that
film criticism doesn't always have to be cynical or sardonic.
More
film criticism that embraces the vast grey areas
of artwork: fewer woke trend think
pieces and more nuance.
Unfortunately, however, the biggest
criticism leveled at the new Doctor Strange trailer is that some
of the set -
pieces shown off are reminiscent
of two
of the most culturally recognizable
films of the past decades, Christopher Nolan's Inception and Lana and Lily Wachowski's The Matrix.
And yes, sometimes the similarties are too strong to make Vice anything over than a
piece of entertainment, but it is
filmed keenly enough to avoid most
of my
criticisms.
